FACULTY EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Announcing the October Faculty Member of the Month
Mary Sirmons, Practical Nursing/Patient Care
Technician Department Chair, Health Science Division
Fort Pierce resident Mary Sirmons is the Indian River State College October Faculty Member of the Month. Mary is a long-time member of the IRSC family, starting in August of 1988 as a nursing instructor. In 1992, she was promoted to Master Instructor and became an Assistant Professor in August of 1997. Today she works with Dr. Ann Hubbard, the Assistant Dean of Nursing, and serves as the Practical Nursing/Patient Care Technician Department Chair, a position she has held since 1998.
As part of the IRSC Nursing faculty, Mary dedicates her career to student success, to which countless students will testify. They might share with you a few of her favorite quotes that she frequently imparts to encourage students. Her simple words of wisdom resonate with her students, and they no doubt carry them with them beyond their education experiences and careers.
Mary works tirelessly to inspire critical thinking and enhance student self-confidence. She also encourages her students to take ownership of their problem-solving, asking them to work difficult situations themselves while still providing them just the right amount of guidance needed to allow them to learn most effectively. Mary also reminds her students that a balanced outlook on their life at school, work and home will help them keep a positive viewpoint about their life as a whole In addition to her work in the classroom and as Department Chair, Mary participates in numerous community activities and fosters Service Learning by facilitating and participating in Health Fairs, exposing the students to community health screenings and disseminating health information.
The students who have been in Mary’s classes eagerly speak to her commitment to student success and how they have benefited from her teaching. One student shares, “Professor Sirmons always expects a lot of us but is very knowledgeable, and she encourages us to learn.” Another states that “She really makes you want to learn – she sees your full potential as a student.” Finally, one other student exclaims, “Professor Sirmons is the best professor I have had!”
