FACULTY EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Announcing the April Faculty Member of the Month
Marvin Hobson, Assistant Professor, IRSC School of Education
Fort Pierce resident Marvin Hobson is the Indian River State College April Faculty Member of the Month. Joining the IRSC family in January of 2008, Marvin serves as an Assistant Professor in working with Dr. Marta Cronin in the IRSC School of Education. Marvin has quickly become a favorite instructor among the students this budding new area of IRSC. He has proven to be an outstanding professor and an excellent addition to the team with the School of Education. Marvin is also currently working on earning his Ph.D.
Marvin contributes far more than knowledge in the classroom – he gives of himself to his students. As a professor, he receives excellent student evaluations confirming his passion for student success and his love of teaching the students in IRSC School of Education. He is a true team player that consistently steps in to assist in any manner needed, mentoring fellow faculty and volunteering for various positions at the College and throughout our community. Marvin was the recipient of a 2012 Endowed Teaching Chair for his vision to create and establish The “Zora Neale Hurston (ZNH) Center for Writing Across the Curriculum” focusing on development of career and job specific writing, as well as preserving Hurston’s writing legacy. A goal of the center is collaboration with faculty members and businesses to identify writing demands in education and business to strengthen student writing. Marvin has many educational talents related to his career, but in his free time he is taking the opportunity to learn to play the saxophone. While Marvin’s dedication to the job is both noteworthy and outstanding, there is no doubt that he is most proud of the latest addition to his family. Marvin and his wife recently adopted a beautiful newborn daughter Shayla.
The students who have been in Marvin’s classes best share how his enthusiasm and knowledge translate into an instructional environment encouraging to student success. One such student states, “Professor Hobson just cares so much about all of his students.” Another declares that “He is an awesome teacher, simply the best professor ever!” Finally this student explains Marvin’s engagement with the students in class and how comfortable they are working with him, “Even after completing his class I’m still comfortable going to him for help, I would definitely recommend taking his class to anyone.”
