When an institution has earned accreditation by the Commission on Colleges, it signifies that it has "a purpose appropriate to higher education and has resources, programs, and services sufficient to accomplish and sustain that purpose." In addition to ensuring that our institutions provide quality programs for students which determines eligibility for Title IV funds (student financial aid), the Commission on Colleges works to influence legislation and regulations that impact the work of member institutions.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states. The Commission’s mission is the enhancement of educational quality throughout the region and it strives to improve the effectiveness of institutions by ensuring that institutions meet standards established by the higher education community that address the needs of society and students.
SACSCOC serves as the common denominator of shared values and practices among the diverse institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Latin America and other international sites approved by the Commission on Colleges that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees. The Commission on Colleges is the representative body of the College Delegate Assembly and is charged with carrying out the accreditation process.
The SACSCOC accrediting process and all of its policies, processes, procedures, and decisions are based on the concepts of integrity or dealing openly and honestly with the member institutions, and on quality and an on-going program of improvement that ensures fulfillment of their stated mission.

Principles of Accreditation:
SACSCOC institutions must comply with the standards contained in the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement and with the policies and procedures of the Commission on Colleges. The Commission on Colleges applies the requirements of its Principles to all applicant, candidate, and member institutions, regardless of type of institution (public, private for-profit, private not-for-profit).

Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement (Updated May 2012)
This Manual is a companion piece to the 2012 Principles of Accreditation, providing guidance to applicant, candidate, and member institutions as well as to evaluation committees of the Commission. This is the final draft and it is currently in production. Along with minor edits, this final draft incorporates changes to Notes included in Core Requirement 2.7.3 and Federal Requirements 4.1 and 4.5.
