Effective for classes that begin January 1, 2013, students admitted to the health science vocational programs {Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy & Surgical Technology} must complete the HSCV 405 “CPR” course. No alternative course/credential for CPR will be accepted. |

Medical assistants are the only allied health professionals specifically trained to work in ambulatory settings, such as physicians' offices, clinics and group practices. These multi-skilled personnel can perform administrative and clinical procedures. Physicians value this unique versatility more and more, as managed care compels them to contain costs and manage human resources efficiently. The demand for medical assistants is expanding rapidly (American Association of Medical Assistants). Indian River State College’s 1300 clock hour Medical Assisting Program can be completed in 9 months full-time or in 18 months part-time.
Upon completion of the Indian River State College Medical Assisting program students are strongly encouraged to become certified. As a Certified Medical Assisting, CMA (AAMA) you are considered the gold standard of medical assisting professionalism. The CMA (AAMA) means a professional edge, increased prestige among colleagues, and greater job security (American Association of Medical Assistants).
Students who enjoy working with their hands, helping patients and working with computers will enjoy the field of Medical Assisting. Upon completion of the Medical Assistant program you will have the skill to complete 4 certifications: Certified Medical Assisting Certificate, Basic X-Ray License, Phlebotomy Certification and EKG Certification. Some other skills include minor surgery, administration of medications and injections, referrals, coding, billing, and scheduling.
In 2012, The Indian River State College Medical Assisting Program graduated 93% of the students who entered the program in 2011. The past rate on the certification (CMA) exam was 93%. The national pass for the CMA exam is 70%. From this class, 86% of the students are currently working in field.
