STUDY ABROAD TRIPS

Study Abroad 2013

IRSC offers several study and travel aboard trips each summer providing students with opportunities to earn college credits as they participate in enriching life-changing experiences.

Business Study Abroad in Brazil:
May 11-18, 2013


Rio-de-JaneiroThe largest country in South America, Brazil recently overtook the United Kingdom as the sixth largest economy in the world. This weeklong Study Abroad excursion to dynamic Brazil will focus on international business and marketing, providing students with a first-hand opportunity to experience cultural differences between the U.S. and Brazil while touring Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, visiting several Brazilian companies and gaining valuable insights into global business and commerce. The estimated cost of this program is $3,150, which includes round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, some meals, ground transportation, special tours, admission fees and travel insurance. This program will be coordinated by Business Management Department Chair Dr. Frank Harber (772-462-7659) and Business Management professors Ray Carpenter and Dr. Herb Ricardo. Participants will have the opportunity to complete several courses toward the Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Business Management.


Service Learning in Costa Rica:
June 23 - July 6, 2013


Costa RicaStudents will have the opportunity to earn college credits in Spanish and Nursing applicable toward an Associate or Bachelor’s degree, enhance their Spanish language skills, and participate in hands-on service learning activities – all while experiencing the beauty and culture of Costa Rica during this two-week Study Abroad program. The students will be based in Heredia, Costa Rica and surrounding locations, gaining the opportunity to live, work and learn side-by-side with residents of this region. In addition to taking on-site classes in Spanish, students will gain deeper knowledge of nursing care, customs and culture through service in health care agencies or other institutions specific to their career interests. The estimated cost is $2,900, which includes airfare, lodging, excursions, and ground transportation. This program will be coordinated by Spanish professor Veronica Tempone (772-462-7704) and Nursing professor Dr. Maria Seidel.


Economics and Math in Europe:
May 7 - 23, 2013


Eiffel TowerThis Study Abroad experience focusing on the nations of Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France and England will enable students to understand, compare, and apply economic, mathematical and statistical concepts that influence the U.S. and European global, social and cultural points of view. Students will have the opportunity to gain a first-hand perspective on the dynamic European Union and its critical impact on the world economy. Cultural highlights will include visits to Europe’s great cities, including London, Rome and Paris. The estimated cost of $3,950 includes airfare, hotels, many meals, entrance fees, ground transportation, and travel insurance. The program will be coordinated by IRSC Economics professor Dr. Maria Davis (772-462-7690) and Math professor Rita Lindsay. Students will be able to earn college credits in Economics and Mathematics.


International Disaster Relief & Humanitarian Assistance:
Macedonia: TBA, 2013


MacedoniaThe purpose of the Study Abroad is to provide Emergency Services students with a unique service learning opportunity to participate in international disaster relief in a foreign setting through intensive simulation exercises under the guidance of American and Macedonian instructors from the Ministry of Defense (army) and Ministry of the Interior (police). Students will work side-by-side with Macedonian students in learning and practicing protocols for responding quickly and effectively to rapidly changing emergency conditions and situations. The estimated cost is $4,100 which includes travel and all accommodations. Emergency Services professor Dr. Paul Forage (772-462-7965) will coordinate this program.
