Central Service Technology

Become a certified registered Central Service Technician.

This six-month program provides the student with the technical ability, knowledge and skills required for entry-level employment as a member of the healthcare team in a hospital central sterile processing or material management department. The Central Service Technology program provides the student with a strong foundation in the essentials of healthcare, anatomy, physiology, medical language and microbiology. Specialty didactic, laboratory and clinical courses in central service technology prepare the student to become an entry-level central service technician and take the national certification exam.

Once You Complete the Program

Graduates earning the IRSC Central Service Technology certificate are able to take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician national and international exams and seek employment with a hospital or outpatient surgery center.

Getting Started

Selection for the Central Service Technology program occurs on a first-come, first-served basis. Review the program application book and expenses before applying.

Illicit drug use, background check, convictions and immunization status may prevent future employment. In addition, externship sites, employers, and regulations about drug use, criminal backgrounds, and immunization status.

Applying to the Central Service Technology Program

The application for the Summer B 2024 program will be accepted after January 26, 2024. The deadline to apply is May 3, 2024 or until full.

To begin the application process:

  1. Read the Central Service Technology Application Booklet.
  2. Complete and submit the IRSC Application for the Central Service Technology program (Pay the $30 non-refundable application fee.)

Licensure Requirements

Indian River State College offers a number of different degrees and certificates leading to professional licensure in the state of Florida.  Some professions require both a degree and the successful completion of additional criteria such as licensure exams, field placements, or clinical hours. Student eligibility to apply to sit for the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) in the State of Florida includes possession of a valid form of identification. Please visit the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) website to ensure your eligibility.

If you are a student who may choose to reside outside of Florida after graduation, IRSC cannot confirm whether this degree program meets educational requirements for professional licensure/certification in your state. Some states have requirements in addition to the program’s curriculum.  If you wish to take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) exam in another state, contact the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) to determine whether this degree will meet their licensure requirements.

Completion of the Central Services Technology requirements makes you eligible to apply to take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) exam in Florida.
