Registration is Underway for Fall Classes in Okeechobee

July 25, 2019 Robert Lane

Registration now is underway for Fall classes with Indian River State College (IRSC) which are available to local residents who can advance their education—and even earn a college degree—right here in Okeechobee.

Students participate in Fall welcome back activities last year at the IRSC Dixon Hendry Campus in Okeechobee. Registration for Fall 2019 classes is now underway with classes starting August 19.

“The faculty and staff at the Dixon Hendry Campus are committed to creating conditions that lead to student success,” shares Russ Brown, IRSC Okeechobee Provost.

IRSC offers more than 100 programs leading to Bachelor’s Degrees, Associate Degrees, Technical Certificates and Applied Technology Diplomas. Students can choose educational options that range from Quick Job Training (developing skills in a year or less) to four-year Baccalaureate Degree programs. Three programs of particular interest to those ready to start work quickly in promising new career fields are the nursing assistant (CNA) program, automotive service technology, and air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating repair program (HVAC), all available through IRSC in Okeechobee.

Health care consistently ranks as one of the top in-demand career fields in Florida. Okeechobee residents can prepare to become a nursing assistant in three to four months. Nursing assistants work under the supervision of medical staff to provide basic care in hospitals, nursing homes, physician’s offices and in-home care. The CNA program in Okechobee starts August 13.

Automotive Service Technology I is offered in a series of seven classes building increasingly sophisticated skills and leading to the Automotive Service Technology II program, a series of five classes. The program begins August 19.

HVAC courses will be held in the Multi-Functional Industrial Lab at the IRSC Dixon Hendry Campus beginning August 19.  This training prepares them for employment working on air conditioning and refrigeration systems for various types of companies, as well as A/C technician jobs with air conditioning companies, a flourishing industry in Florida.
