April 30, 2020 Suzanne Seldes

Indian River State College mourns the passing of entrepreneur, community volunteer and philanthropist Alma Lee Loy. An avid supporter of the College, Loy represented Indian River County on the IRSC Foundation Board of Trustees for more than a dozen years.

Alma Lee Loy

Loy joined the Foundation Board of Directors on February 11, 2008. She served as the Vice Chair from 2012 to 2014. Her love was Take Stock in Children, a comprehensive program that helps at-risk, low-income children succeed by providing college scholarships, volunteer mentors, student advocates/case managers, early intervention, and long-term support.

A sport lover and a fund raiser, Loy was always active at the Foundation’s annual golf tournament, which supports IRSC scholarships. She took pride in all of the College’s advancements and achievements, and represented the Foundation Board of Directors at major event and recognitions such as the 2019 Aspen Prize celebration.

“Alma Lee Loy lived her life with an abundance of passion,” shares IRSC President, Dr. Ed Massey. “Our College was most fortunate to benefit from her great wisdom, generosity, and relentless desire to give back. Alma Lee leaves a legacy of thoughtful and dedicated community leadership, and she will forever remain a model for all Foundation Board directors. She will be sincerely missed.”

On April 20, the IRSC Foundation Board of Directors unanimously selected Alma Lee Loy to be honored with the Emerita status.

This isn’t the first time, Loy was recognized as an exemplar by IRSC. In 2010, the College’s Dan K. Richardson Entrepreneurship Program named Loy its Entrepreneur of the Year, an honor reserved for business founders or leaders who exemplify exceptional commitment to the free enterprise system who have made a positive impact in both their personal and professional lives.

IRSC is grateful for Alma Lee Loy’s devotion to the College and for her countless contributions to the Treasure Coast region.
