Fort Pierce resident Mary Hart is the Indian River State College February 2021 Staff Employee of the Month. Mary began her employment with IRSC in January of 1994—starting as Custodian I. Mary earned promotions to Custodian II in August 1999, Custodian III in August 2006, and since August 2014 has held the position of Custodian IV.
Mary exhibits deep dedication and commitment to IRSC students and the institution. Her focus is always on students and how they see the College. Mary often is seen with a student riding alongside her on the golf cart—going the extra mile to help a lost student find their destination.
Mary is not shy about getting a job done or the hard work her many responsibilities include. She will strip and wax a floor one day, and on the following day, be found on a ladder or lift cleaning windows. She is not assigned to just one building but covers multiple areas a night—filling in for staff when they are out on leave or sick. Mary also covers custodial duties on Branch campuses and at other College facilities when needed.
Additionally, Mary shares her expertise filling in when the Custodial team supervisor is out, managing the team as the acting lead. Mary volunteers to serve on interview committees for Custodial and Physical Plant positions and is a lead trainer for new employees in the department. Additionally, Mary mentors both new and old employees alike, sharing her wealth of experience and institutional knowledge to help them succeed.
Mary has more than earned the trust and respect of her co-workers. She is a natural leader who rallies her teammates to complete projects or step in during an emergency. One co-worker declares, “Everyone on the Physical Plant team values Mary and knows that she’s an important member and leader on our team.” Another of Mary’s associates adds, “She always knows just how to get the job done. Without her, every job we do would be more challenging.” Finally, a co-worker says, “Mary has been a part of the IRSC family for 27 years, and we are so appreciative of how she makes IRSC a better place to be!”
