FORT PIERCE, Fla. (July 22, 2025) – Indian River State College announces that all nine graduates from its Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Class of 2025 achieved a remarkable 100% first-time pass rate on the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) examination.
The exceptional performance of The River’s MLT graduates significantly exceeds national benchmarks, demonstrating the program’s commitment to academic excellence and comprehensive preparation of healthcare professionals. According to the latest national data, the average first-time pass rate for MLT certification examinations is 76.96%, making The River’s achievement particularly noteworthy.
“This outstanding achievement reflects the dedication of our students and the excellence of our faculty and curriculum,” said Dr. Heather Belmont, Vice President of Academic Affairs/Chief Academic Officer. “These results prove our graduates are entering the workforce as skilled diagnosticians who healthcare systems can count on from their very first day.”
The nine successful graduates completed their examinations between June 24 and July 1, 2025, with program mean scaled scores consistently above national averages across all subject areas tested. The ASCP BOC certification examination evaluates competency in critical areas including blood banking, urinalysis, chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, and laboratory operations.
Testing Highlights:
- 100% first-time pass rate compared to 76.96% national average
- Program mean scaled score of 632 compared to 500 national average
- All graduates achieved certification status, demonstrating readiness to enter the healthcare workforce
- Strong performance across all examination subject areas
The Medical Laboratory Technician program at The River prepares students for careers in hospital laboratories, reference laboratories, physician office laboratories, and other healthcare facilities. MLTs perform essential diagnostic tests that help physicians diagnose, treat, and monitor patient conditions.
