Prepare to become an entry-level corrections officer in the state of Florida. Completing this program makes you eligible to take the Florida Department of Law Enforcement State Certification Examination and then seek employment with a local or state municipality.
This minimum standard class is regulated by Florida Statutes and is a highly structured and disciplined program with special rules, policies, and procedures.
This program is not eligible for financial aid.
The Correctional Officer Basic Recruit Training Program consists of 444 hours of training and lasts approximately four months. The class meets during the daytime, Monday through Friday. This program is generally offered once or twice a year, depending upon student or regional agency demand. Student-recruits wear academy uniforms and participate in a highly structured and disciplined classroom environment.
Currently certified law enforcement officers looking to cross over into corrections are generally offered the option to attend the necessary classes within an upcoming Corrections Academy instead of attending a separate Law Enforcement-to-Corrections Crossover Academy. Crossover training consists of 222 hours.
The Indian River State College Criminal Justice Institute is certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to conduct authorized Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission courses.

Get hands-on experiences at the Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex, one of the most comprehensive and technologically advanced public safety training facilities in the country.
Complete certified training courses required by the Bureau of Firefighter Standards and Training.
Be prepared to become a certified firefighter or advance your career in emergency and fire response.
Admission to the fire science academy program is on a first come, first served basis. Once your application is turned in, we will determine if you qualify to receive a seat in the upcoming available class. Space in the program is limited.
The fire academy track program is a two-year degree program that will give you the skills, abilities and education to be successful in the fire service.
In this program, you will complete:
● The Associate of Science in Fire Science Technology degree ● The Emergency Medical Technology program ● The Basic Fire Recruit Academy
You’ll take your courses in general education and fire science as part of a cohort, which means you’ll be with the same classmates for your entire program. You and your classmates will function as a team through your classes and team-building exercises.
When you finish your fire academy track program, you will be eligible for certification as a firefighter and emergency medical technician in the State of Florida.
To enroll in this program, you must:
1. Apply to Indian River State College. 2. Complete the fire academy track preliminary application. 3. Schedule an appointment with Professor Aaron Goodale to turn in your application, get interviewed and verify your admission.
The final semester of this two-year degree program will be the Basic Recruit Fire Academy. Before you can begin it, you must successfully complete all the required coursework for the degree program.

This program is only for currently certified firefighters.
Earn your associate degree in fire science technology through our flexible online program. This program is designed to work with your busy schedule while teaching you the skills and knowledge you need to advance your career.
You will learn about the science behind fire hazards and fire control, including the most effective operating procedures for fires and other emergencies.
With this degree, you’ll be prepared to work as a leader in firefighting or pursue related careers like investigator, fire protection and detection specialist, fire engineer or safety inspector.
This program has selective admissions. You must complete and pass a multi-step application process to be accepted.
To meet all requirements to become a certified firefighter, you must also be a certified EMT or paramedic. If you are not already certified, you can complete your training at The River.You will learn about the science behind fire hazards and fire control, including the most effective operating procedures for fires and other emergencies.
The basic recruit fire academy will teach you the skills and knowledge required to become a certified combat firefighter in the State of Florida.
When you complete the basic recruit fire academy, you will be eligible to take the state’s written and practical examinations required by the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training.
The program is offered as a daytime program meeting Monday through Friday for 12 to 15 weeks or as an evening program meeting Monday through Thursday and Saturdays for 20 to 24 weeks.

Law Enforcement Officer Crossover from Correctional Officer Training

If you are currently a certified corrections officer, you can enroll in our crossover program to become a law enforcement officer. This program takes eight months to complete and is offered based on demand.
This program has selective admissions. You must complete and pass a multi-step application process to be accepted.
The law enforcement academy track is a two-year degree program that will give you the skills, abilities and knowledge for a successful law enforcement career.
In this program, you will complete:
The Associate of Science in Criminal Justice degree
Basic law enforcement recruit academy
You’ll take courses in general education and criminal justice in a para-military format, meaning you will learn within a unit of students in a highly disciplined and team-structured environment.
When you finish this program, you will be eligible to take the State of Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification Examination and become a law enforcement officer. To enroll in this program, you must apply to Indian River State College and complete the law enforcement academy track program application. This application must be completely filled out.
Once you have completed the application, please contact Richard Dewey to schedule an appointment to bring the application in, be interviewed and verify the admissions process. This is a first-come first first-served program, meaning that seats are awarded in the order that qualified applications are received. Seats are limited, so it’s important to apply as early as possible in the application cycle.
The final semester of this two-year degree program will be the law enforcement basic recruit academy. You must complete all the required tests through the Criminal Justice Institute’s Selection Center before you can begin the basic law enforcement recruit academy. You will also need to meet certain requirements to enroll, such as passing a background check. Review the Selection Center requirements.

Registered Nurses (RNs) can expand their knowledge and skills by enrolling in the RN to BSN program at the Indian River State College School of Nursing. The RN to BSN program expands students’ knowledge and abilities in leadership, evidence-based practice, community, research, and theory. The nursing curriculum includes 10 courses with asynchronous online lectures along with clinical learning experiences in three courses. Students who are completing their registered nurse education and current Registered Nurses (RNs) are eligible to apply. Completion of the ADN program requirements makes you eligible to apply to take the NCLEX-RN in Florida or one of the nursing compact states if you apply for a multi-state license under the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are trained to work under the direction of doctors and registered nurses to assist with examining and treating patients; measure and record patient vital signs; prepare and administer injections; dress wounds; assist patients with bathing, dressing and eating; and record the progress of patients.
The Practical Nursing program is a 1350 clock hour program with four courses in lecture, lab, and the clinical setting. Students will earn a vocational certificate after successful completion of the program and will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam.
The Practical Nursing courses are offered part-time in the evenings and on weekends, providing a flexible format for working adults.
