Indian River State College offers a number of different degrees and certificates leading to professional licensure in the state of Florida.  Some professions require both a degree and the successful completion of additional criteria such as licensure exams, field placements, or clinical hours. Student eligibility to apply to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in the State of Florida is defined in F.S., 468.302 and also includes possession of a valid form of identification. Please visit the Florida Department of Health website to ensure your eligibility.

Completion of the Radiography program requirements makes you eligible to apply to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)  in Florida.

Some states have requirements in addition to the program’s curriculum. Program Highlights:

• Clinical Experience: Gain practical experience through a competency-based clinical education component conducted at healthcare settings in the four-county district. This hands-on training prepares you to perform diagnostic imaging procedures with confidence and professionalism.​

Career Pathways:
Upon graduation, you’ll be eligible to sit for the national certifying examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Successful certification opens doors to employment in hospitals, imaging centers and physicians’ offices. Additionally, the program lays the foundation for further specialization in imaging modalities such as ultrasound, CT, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy or magnetic resonance imaging.​

Travel Note: You should be prepared to travel to any of the clinical education sites located within the four-county service district of Indian River State College: St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee and Indian River counties. All clinical education sites are located within a one-hour driving distance from the Massey Campus. You will be expected to arrange travel and other commitments to arrive at class or clinical assignments on time.

Classes in the Radiography program meet four to five days per week for four to eight hours per day, typically beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Clinical rotations generally begin at 7:30 a.m. or 8:00 a.m. and end at either 4:00 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. However, there may be occasions when rotations may be scheduled between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Occasional weekend and evening rotations are required.

Accreditation
The radiography program at IRSC is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). This is the only organization recognized by the United States Department of Education for accreditation of radiography programs.

The most recent on-site visit was in 2017, which resulted in a full eight-year accreditation award. The next accreditation site visit is tentatively scheduled for the third quarter of 2025. General program accreditation information and the current accreditation award letter can be found here.

Associate in Science in Surgical Services

Associate Degrees

As a surgical services technology student at The River, your coursework will cover topics such as pharmacology and anesthesia, surgical techniques and procedures, with a focus on the surgical specialties.

You’ll also complete three clinical experiences in surgical specialties; these involve rotations in a variety of areas, from pre-operative to post-anesthesia care. Clinical sites include hospitals and outpatient surgery centers within the four-county area.

Licensure Requirements
Completion of The River’s surgical services program makes you eligible to apply to take the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam in Florida. Please visit the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) website to ensure your eligibility.

Accreditation
The Surgical Services (Technology) Program at Indian River State College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA).

Accreditation
The IRSC Associate in Science in Respiratory Care program at Indian River State College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). Program #200380. CoARC accredits respiratory therapy education programs in the United States. To achieve this end, it utilizes an “outcome-based” process. Dental Hygiene

Associate Degree

The application for the Summer A 2026 program will be available from October 6, 2025 through January 16, 2026.

This two-year program requires 20 semester hours of general education and 68 semester hours and major field required courses for a total of 88 semester hours. Students will be enrolled in 16-18 credits per semester, attend class 30 hours per week and have 20-30 hours of homework each week.

Accreditation
The Indian River State College Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Preference for admission will be given to residents that live in the four county service area of IRSC: Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee, and Indian River counties.

IRSC Dental Clinic and Services
The Dental Hygiene program at IRSC offer dental services for individuals seeking dental care. Services are available to patients of all ages and are by appointment only. IRSC Dental Hygiene students are in training under the direction of experienced and licensed faculty which may result in longer appointment times. Services are offered at reduced prices.
